Myth #3
THEY THINK SMOKING IS RELAXING
“Relaxing… Not!”
Many people think that having a cigarette relaxes them. However, nicotine is not a relaxant; nicotine is a stimulant like caffeine. Smoking causes stress. “When can I have my next cigarette, where can I have my next cigarette, will I have enough cigarettes to last the rest of the day, where can I buy more cigarettes?” Nicotine withdrawal feels like stress. Smoking a cigarette relieves the nicotine withdrawal and stress caused by the previous cigarette. Smoking is like wearing tight shoes just to get the relief of taking them off.  
But you say: “After a hard day, having a cigarette relaxes me.” Let’s look at that. You’ve had a hard day, you sit down to have a cigarette, and you feel relaxed. Why do you feel relaxed? Because you’re sitting down and taking a break, technically you’re doing breathing exercises (inhale, hold, exhale; although you’re breathing in cancer causing smoke), and you’re relieving the nicotine withdrawal from the previous cigarette. So you feel relaxed, you associate smoking with relaxation (a Pavlovian or conditioned response) and nicotine gets credit for what it doesn’t deserve. You could have felt relaxed by sitting down, doing some deep breathing exercises, and having a cup of coffee or tea.
This is very important for you to understand if you want to stop smoking with ease. Nicotine is not a relaxant, nicotine is a stimulant. The only reason smoking seems to be relaxing is because smoking relieves the nicotine withdrawal and stress caused by the previous cigarette. Smoking is like wearing tight shoes just to get the relief of taking them off.
By stopping smoking, you’re moving away from the possibility of getting cancer, having a stroke, heart attack, emphysema, COPD.
Next time you want to feel relaxed, do this: sit down, have a cup of coffee or tea, and do some deep breathing exercises. Breathe in for 5 seconds, breathe out for 5 seconds. Do the 4-7-8 breath. Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, and breathe out for 8 seconds. Do that 4 times then let your breathing return to normal.  You’ll feel calm, relaxed, and in control; able to manage any situation in a calm, relaxed, and sensible manner.

Myth #2
THEY THINK IF THEY STOP SMOKING THEY’LL GAIN WEIGHT
“Appetite Suppressant… Not!”
Some people are concerned about gaining weight if they stop smoking. That’s a very legitimate concern. The fact is, contrary to the myth, nicotine is not an appetite suppressant.
In fact, by stopping smoking, you’ll be able to eat less and enjoy it more, once that nasty cigarette taste is out of your mouth. Your sense of smell and taste will improve, so you can eat mindfully instead of mindlessly; and eat less. Also, you’ll have a stronger lung capacity, so you can work out more, enjoy the fun activities you like to do, and burn more calories.
But you say: “When I’m smoking, I’m not eating. If I stop smoking, I’ll want to do something else with my hands, like eat more.” There are so many other things you can do with your hands besides eat. Once you’re smoke free, you won’t have that constant stress caused by the previous cigarette. Your awareness will increase and you’ll be aware if you are truly hungry, or just trying to change the way you feel.
It’s not worth the health problems, shortness of breath, coughing, smell, stained teeth, cost, and social stigma associated with smoking just because you think you’ll gain weight if you stop. Stopping smoking doesn’t cause weight gain, eating more causes weight gain.
Next time you have a craving for food, try this: put a timer on for 15 minutes. Studies have shown that most cravings go away after only 15 minutes. If after 15 minutes you still have the craving, then have the food. Just have half or less. And you’ll be surprised to find that having only half or less will more than satisfy the craving.

People struggle to stop smoking because they think by stopping smoking they’re “giving up” something. They think they’re denying themselves something, depriving themselves of a pleasure, or making a sacrifice.
But the beautiful truth is by stopping smoking you’re not giving up anything. You’re not denying yourself anything, you’re not depriving yourself a pleasure, or making a sacrifice; because cigarettes do absolutely nothing for you except relieve the nicotine withdrawal and stress caused by the previous cigarette.
